Is dueling network killing the TCG?

hello. have a good evening/day/morning/night depending the time you may be reading this. the porpouse of my post today is somewhat unusual. i usually write a bunch of stuff i like and think that they are "interesting", however this time i will be writing about a topic i have been thinking for some time ago... the topic is the very well known page known as Dueling network and the even more famous game of Yu-gi-oh! TCG. the topic is quite simple here, i want to debate whether Dueling network will sometime kill the TCG or it will only be a casual page that emulates the game. you want to know? then read!

what the hell is Dueling network?

Dueling network is webpage unassociated with Konami digital entertainment that emulates in it`s context the Yu-gi-oh! TCG cards and the gameplay. this page is completely free and gains no funds except from voluntary donations made by the users. the webpage has the porpouse to make duelist from all the world have the chance to play ANY deck no matter the price against anyone. the webpage has great popularity and is very good for people to practice and pass time playing it.

now that i explained what DN is i think i can proceed to the heart of the beast.

what can be wrong in playing Dueling network?

nothing. really there is absolutely nothing wrong playing Dueling network, sure it ain`t that bad like drugging yourself or have sexual intercourse with someone you know but, you must know that you are using Konami products in a page not associated to Konami. that`s all i can`t simply thrash hte page because it`s not promoting an antisocial behavior or a place where to see porn so we are OK here.

is it better to play the true cards or Dueling Network?

when i first began to play Yu-gi-oh! TCG i really liked the game and i stilll do like it. you can`t simply change the feeling of playing your OWN cards in a real duel against your opponent just for fun, i mean it`s really a "magical" feeling there... i will try not to lose focus sorry for that :). the thing is that indeed playing in real life has no comparison or match, however a lot of people seem to prefer Dueling network for the sole reason the game has turned into a money eater hobby that drains all your funds if you want to play properly, if you are playing non.meta then you may have the case that you may get beaten pretty easely most of the scenarios for not having the right cards which are the pretty expensive ones. i must say dueling network is so much much cheaper than playing in real life since you don`t waste a bunch of money to just play or feel a deck. in comparison to these i suggest that if you have access to internet at your home and like Yu-gi-oh! TGC you should register and give a try to Dueling network if you can. if you have the funds to play the TCG and have a local group of friends then why not buy some structure deck? in my personal experience i have a Dark world deck and have access to Internet at my home, however i barely play in real life with someone and sometimes that makes me think i wasted my money and time...  but, when i do duel someone i feel very happy and joyful to play. in Dueling network however, i can sue any deck and play very nice people(usually) whenever i can. i am not defending or making free propaganda for both Konami or Dueling Network i`m simply stating the situation to the "nude" here.

Will there be a time when Dueling network will destroy the TCG?

absolutely not! the dueling network relies on the TCG to keep living, to put it more simple they need Konami to create new good cards so the Dueling network can upload them. think about these a second: if there would be no Konami would Dueling network keep on? i think not. dueling network needs the cards Konami makes to keep fresh and trendy instead of monotonous and pointless. another question to make you think: do you think a person that has a bunch of cards that has played the game for more thatn 8 years, that has payed thousands of dollars in cards, sleeves, play mats and probably more due to tournaments will drop the game for just a page where you can play free? if you think yes i really don`t see how you even know what i`m talking here... absolutely not! a Yu-gi-oh! player is and will always be a passionate to the game no matter how ugly the game is turning and how old he/she is getting, they only eant to play and collect and a website is not changing that. as i said earlier and with the risk of entering a tautological state i repeat that dueling network needs TCG and will die without it, however TCG doesn`t need Dueling network at all.... and that`s my next point.

can Dueling network get shutted down if Konami wants to?

if people reach a point when they rather save a hundred of dollars in dueling network than in the TCG and the player base gets to deep in Dueling network to the point when no one or very few people will go to YCS(Yu-gi-oh! championship series for long) or tournaments and when Dueli8ng network starts to make mass national championships or even world championships then yes, if any of these conditions aren`t met then i see dueling network living for some years.

Is Dueling network taking a lot of playerbase?

i know a lot of of people that plays in Dueling network and also plays the TCG and to date none of them has ever leaved their decks to sit in a chair to duel in the web. i cannot aply thes e to all cases since i am not omnipresent and much less omniscient. i still think a person that has wasted just a bit too much in the game woudn`t drop the real game to sit in a chair and use an unexistent deck you claim as yours.

so there is no possibility TCG will die?

Yu-gi-oh! TCG will not die due to dueling network, it will die because the company has evolved the game to a point that is almost unplayable unless you are either lucky or have the funds necessary to play and people constantly complains about the banlist making some people even quitting the game for considering it a "waste of money and time", the infamous banlist that every six months hurts thousands of players who invested money on a very good deck that ends up getting killed, sodomized and unrespected later, and finally the constant revolution of ideas and new trends will make younger generations get an interest in the new games like Vanguard (i haven`t played to be honest) or other stuff like World of Warcraft. the thing is taht Yu-gi-oh! TCG will surely die since younger generations barely get an interest in this way of life and most of the playerbase is in their teens or 20`s which in a few years will turn most of us into people who won`t return or have an interest in this again, people who will view the game as: "why the fu$%# i wasted so much money here" or "what a childish game". let`s face it readers. the game will die with us the last generation who likes this game and when we extinguish the love we once had for this there will only remain memories of a once great game..... so i`m telling it now the killer of Yu-gi-oh! TCG will not be DN but it will be time and ideas.

Discalimer: i do not own Dueling network or Konami or any product related to them, this opinion is only for entertaining porpouses and no more. this information may be used in other websites as long you don`t claim to be the writer. any action of claiming this will result in severe legal situation.

  1. Konami could use Dueling Network to improve the Banlists (testing future broken cards/decks)

  2. I think konami would be best to buy dueling network rather than waste a possibly greater sum in a legal battle. They could literally offer any sum of money and the owners would have to take it because the other option is legal battle and getting shutdown.

That aside I think dn is great and i doubt it "steals" any players. I myself only very recently found dn. I live in the middle of nowhere, a town with 3000 people where you would be hard pressed to find even one person with the same hobby as you regardless of what it is. Because of that dn is the only way I am able to play yugioh. On top of that I still buy cards both secondhand on ebay and brand new from kmart or walmart(I spent 70$ today on collectors boxes).

If konami does anything to harm dn I can guaruntee that 99% of layers who understand the situation will be greatly angered. It's because of our demographic, young, erratic, males looking for a game to best eachother in. I have seen guys print off copies of cards to play with and we let them because the rest of us were poor too. That was back when I would have my parents drive me a half hour away once a week to play in the closest card shop that has since closed. Point is, those who can't afford it will find ways around and those who can still cant get enough and dn will only get them more invested in the gameplay because they can easily try out different combos and discover more cards worth buying a booster box to find to use irl.
