Versions
this part will be a reference to the golden, silver, bronze and modern Spectre and the diferences between them.
Golden age version
the first Spectre made his debut in the comic more fun comics # 52. the story begins with the police officer Jim Corrigan who was dedicated to his job got himself wet his feet into cement to later be thrown to a the sea to die. the soul of Corrigan however was asked before entering heaven by a being called "the voice" who is none other than the Presence/God himself who told him if he wanted to be his agent in the world to exterminate evil. Jim accepted the job and took the role of the Spectre. he proceeded to kill his murderers and to hunt down criminals but, his fiancee Clarice Winston got mortally wounded in the process, with his newfound power however he was able to return her to life, but fearing that he might hurt her with his double life as God`s wrath he broke up with her. later after punishing terribly criminals he was granted a membership to become a member of the Justice society of America. during the very first editions of his adventures as shown evidently on the left part of this article his robe was blue instead of the very known green we all know. he had vast magical andf astral powers during this time.
Silver age Version
during the time of 1950-1960 the Spectre was brought back in the Silver age with some changes added to him. now his robe was completely green not oscilating grenish-blue, his powers were increased reaching the level of omnuipotence at certain times and grewe much more sadistic and harsh in his punishments. during this time his adventure in the comics were more focused on teaming up with Batman in the series the brave and the bold and in the crossover he had with his fellow members of the Justice Society of America with the Justice League. his 10 issue series were not much relevant to his bio due to the lack of threats and foes he had there and the issue he was virtually omnipotent.
Bronze age version
the Spectre returned to the comics in the anthology comic book known as Adventure comics in the chap ter of the wrath of... the Spectre. this version of the Spectre (which was still Jim Corrigan) was turned to be more harsh and cruel in his punishments in comparison to the other versions. the pospouse of this was to make the Spectre during this time a "rebel" or "anti-hero" to make him more appealing to the public, which ended on great critics for the writer Micheael Flester whic hexhibited a nearly evil Spectre this tme. a good example of this is that during this time he turned criminals into candles, candies or cheese to be devoured by animals like rats, rabbits and so on. his apperances included some comics like: the brave and the bold, All-star squadron, DC comics present and Ghost #97-99. before entering the crisis on infinite earths he is shown gurding the entrance of hell in the comic of the Swamp thing when the Great evil beast emerged, th Spectre then tried to face it but again it ended up getting beaten up quite easely. in the comic last days of the Justice League the Spectre failed to do a mission for God and ended up getting punished. during the first reboot of crisis on infinite earths the Spectre appeared to face the Anti.monitor just to get beaten up by him, which means he was depowered by this time. the result of the crisis on infinite earths led to a mass reboot of the characters of DC which affected our ghostly buddy alike. it is important to notice this is the time the Spectre starts to lose nearly every fight he has against a foe to date.
modern age version
Three years after the cancellation of the Doug Moench version, the
Spectre was again given his own series, this time written by writer and
former theology student John Ostrander,
who chose to re-examine the Spectre in his aspects as both the embodied
Avenging Wrath of the Murdered Dead and as a brutal 1930s policeman.
Ostrander placed the Spectre in complex, morally ambiguous situations that posed certain ethical questions, one example being: What vengeance should be wrought upon a woman who killed her abusive husband in his sleep? Other notable dilemmas included, among others:
Furthermore, the Spectre was not the first embodiment of God's anger, but was the replacement for the previously minor DC character Eclipso. Ostrander chose to portray this as a distinction between the Spectre's pursuit of vengeance and Eclipso's pursuit of revenge. In a historical context, Eclipso was responsible for the biblical Flood, while the Spectre was the Angel of Death who slew the firstborn Egyptian children. Spectre and Eclipso have battled numerous times through history but neither entity can be fully destroyed.
The Spectre has also played a pivotal role in the Crisis on Infinite Earths and Zero Hour storylines. In both cases, in the final struggle against the main villain (the Anti-Monitor and Parallax, respectively) the Spectre was the only hero capable of standing against the villains directly, allowing the other heroes time to put a plan into action that would destroy the villains once and for all.
Although all of these versions are usually considered to be from the Earth-Two of the Pre-Crisis DC multiverse, the same continuity started during the Golden Age, an Earth-One version of The Spectre was shown to team-up with Batman and Superman on a few occasions.
Ostrander placed the Spectre in complex, morally ambiguous situations that posed certain ethical questions, one example being: What vengeance should be wrought upon a woman who killed her abusive husband in his sleep? Other notable dilemmas included, among others:
- The tiny (fictional) nation of Vlatava, the history of which was an endless cycle of civil war, ethnic cleansing, retribution, and blood feuds that had endured for centuries. The Spectre responded by judging the whole nation guilty, razing the land and killing the entire population except for two opposing politicians, one of them the on-and-off supervillain Count Vertigo.
- The pending execution of a wrongfully convicted man. His death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after the Spectre threatened to kill the entire population of the state of New York in retribution, arguing that if the execution was carried out, the "people of the state of New York" would become guilty of murder in his eyes.
- A 90-year-old woman who had spent her entire life trying to atone for the single murder she had secretly committed in the 1920s. The Spectre found her on her deathbed.
Furthermore, the Spectre was not the first embodiment of God's anger, but was the replacement for the previously minor DC character Eclipso. Ostrander chose to portray this as a distinction between the Spectre's pursuit of vengeance and Eclipso's pursuit of revenge. Day of vengeance
during the event of day of vengeance the Spectre is without a host and turns into a mad spirit which is causing rampage in earth, he turns into his most hostile and evil version to the date, he starts to kill murderers violently but is also killing people for minor crimes such as stealing or lying. Eclipso the former wrath of god and nemesis of the Spectre comes and tricks him to extermminate all magic in the world for Eclipso states that:"it is the source of all evil and catastrophies". the Spectre proceeds to attack every wizard, mage or withch in DC, temporarly shutting down beings like Raven or Zattana. he then proceeds to attack the wizard Shazam but, his protector Captain Marvel comes and fights the Spectre only to be defeated by the rampaging Spectre and eventually manages to kill Shazam. later the Phantom Stranger comes and tell him to stop, but Spectre denies and continues to fight against the Stranger, Spectre manages to turn the Phantom Stranger into a mouse and temporarly leaves him useless. when all seems lost Dr. Fate(Hector Hall) comes and defies the Spectre and when the battle is to begin Nabu(the being in Dr. Ftes helmet) leaves Hector and decides to take on the Spectre one on one. the Spectre faes Nabu in a very hard combat for both sides, but at the end Spectre wins and kills Nabu ending the ninth cycle of magic. the story ends with Spectre receiving his new host Crispus Allen.
blackest night
during the event of blackest night the Spectre appears at the very beginning of the story to fight Parallax(Hal Jordan) and gets like usually defeated, later after this the leader of the black lantern corps Nekron views the power and potential of the Spectre and introduces several black rings into the Spectre, the transformation begins and the Spectre becomes a dark evil being of great size, the Spectre in reality is sealed inside Allen and the black lantern rings are supressing him. with the aid of the Phantom Stranger and the Blue Devil team up to distract the black lantern Spectre from destroying Hal Jordan, but only free him temporarly. the posessed Spectre starts to seek Hal Jordan, Hal tries to fight him only to see his emoltional spectrum fails to hurt him, Jordan is later forced to use a last resource: Parallax. Hal allows the fear entity to posess him to fight the Spectre and free him from the control of the black rings, Parallaxx/Hal mange to take him down and free him. the leader of the Red lantern corps Atrocitus also becomes interested in the power of the Spectre and proceeds to capture him and turn him into his anger battry for his ring due to the Spectre`s nature of wrath and vengeance. however Atrocitus fails to to capture him with the Spectre telling him:"i`m god`s anger" and the "real" god of wrath. later he proceeds to battle Nekron but finds out that he is without a soul and thus is inmune to his powers, Nekron banishes him to another dimension which the Spectre escapes after the blackest night incident.
Incarnations of the Spectre
Aztar/Ragel: the very same spirit of the Spectre, he is a fallen angel who helped Lucifer in his rebellion but, at the end repented and asked forgiveness. God forgave Aztar but turned him in his Spirit of vengeance. he is the spirit of vengeance himself.
Jim Corrigan:the very first published Spectre and the most famous one to date. he was a detective who got killed by a mob leader and later God turned him into the Spectre so he could fight the evil in the world and be the host of Aztar.
Hal Jordan: after the soul of Jim Corrigan found peace in heaven he was freed from his role of the Spectre and thus Aztar was without a host, at first he wanted Jim but refused due to have found happiness. so Aztar chooses Hal Jordan as his new host due to his potential. Hal agreeds as he sees in his role as the Spectre redemption for all the sins he caused when he was posessed by Parallax and becomes the new spirit of Vengeance.
Crispus Allen: Crispus Allen was a police officer who worked in Metropolis and is agnostic in spite to his family`s strong faith in God. one night Crispus suffers an accident and dies. God tells Aztar to enter Crispus`s body. the Spectre enters unhappy to Crispus`s body making him his new host, the same happened to Crispus`s since he didn`t liked to be God`s employee neither he liked much the Spectre. the odd relation between the two however doesn`t interfere with their performance and they actually made a pretty good Spectre.
Powers
flight: he can fly.
relative invulnerability: the Spectre can only be harmed by a very strong energy blast or magical artifact.
warper: he can travel to anyplace he wants at the time he needs to.
relative omnipotence: this is really a wild card here. sometimes the Spectre appears so powerful that no one can match him, other times he appears weaker and can be beaten up by some guys like: Anti-monitor,Parallax, Nekron and Nabu to a certain point. the thing is that the Spectre is as strong as God neeed him to be. so if he has permission from God he can do anything, if he is not then he is unpredictable in a result. the power of the Spectre however can reach vast cosmic scales depending on the Presence`s will.
Disclaimer: i do not own the Spectre or any characters from DC they are property od DC, neither do i own this images or claim iown this data. this is just used for educational porpuses.
